Socratic Seminar: Mini Project

Middle to High school students face a lot of pressure from stereotyped gender expectations, identity, peer pressure, and other expectations. You will be able to brainstorm some gender stereotypes and find examples of those stereotypes in popular culture and discuss how the stereotypes affect their lives. You will then analyze/evaluate the characters and characters’ speech from the following books: The Female of the Species and Th1rteen R3asons Why (and Netflix series). These discussions and findings will be presented to the class and discussed in your small groups.

On your tear-off poster sheet, during this week, answer the following questions:

  • What it means to you to be male?
  • What it means to you to be female?
  • What personal stereotypes have you faced?
  • How does those stereotypes hold up to what men and women should be? How does race play a factor?
  • How do you personally feel women and girls are supposed to carry themselves? What about men and boys?

  1. What it means to you to be male? To be a male means to be a masculine role model. Male is a gender so it means being a man or boy.

What it means to you to be female? To be a female means to be a feminine role model. Females are a type of gender so it means being a woman or girl.

What personal stereotypes have you faced? I’ve faced personal stereotypes every day, one of them being that white people always tend to clutch on to there bag when I walk past.

How does those stereotypes hold up to what men and women should be? How does race play a factor? Black men and women shouldn’t be as stereotyped as an threat we should be treated equal like everyone else. Race plays a big factor because I know if an white woman or men walk past me i wouldn’t feel uncomfortable and grab my belongings close to me.

How do you personally feel women and girls are supposed to carry themselves? What about men and boys? I feel like women should carry themselves with respect, same with girls they should carry themselves as “young women”. Men should carry themselves with respect, boys should carry and prepare thyself as “young men”.

  2. What it means to you to be male?
I wouldn’t know bc im not one but… To be a male means to be a masculine role model. Male is a gender so it means being a man or boy.

What it means to you to be female?
Being female means I have to live up to a certain standard. I have to act a certain way and wear certain clothes. I think there are stereotypes associated with females and how females are suppose to be or act.

What personal stereotypes have you faced?
Having an attitude or being loud (even tho I am ) ;p

How does those stereotypes hold up to what men and women should be? How does race play a factor?
Generalizations reflect general assumptions regarding individuals from specific social gatherings. Be that as it may, regardless of whether there is a general distinction between these gatherings, not every single individual model in these gatherings will essentially contrast from one another. By and large, men are taller than ladies, however we as a whole know singular people for whom this isn’t valid or for whom the thing that matters is even turned around. However the cliché observation that a specific element describes participation of a particular gathering normally drives individuals to overemphasize contrasts among gatherings and think little of varieties inside gatherings.

How do you personally feel women and girls are supposed to carry themselves? What about men and boys?
In short, women can read maps despite claims that they lack the spatial skills for such efforts, while men can learn to empathies and need not be isolated like Mel Gibson’s Nick Marshall, the emotionally retarded male lead of the film What Women Want and a classic stereotype of the unfeeling male that is perpetuated by the supporters of the hard-wired school of intellectual differences.

  3. 1)What it means to you to be a male: being a male means having control and ownership and to take responsibility

2)What it means to be a female : being a female means having standards being being capable and having enough courage to do what’s best for her

3)What personal stereotypes have you faced : most of the time when I walk in stores I get followed or ask to take my hood off because my skin color

4)How do those stereotypes hold up to what men and women should be? How does race play a factor: it holds a factor in what men and women should be because judging men or women about a stereotype could change someone’s whole thoughts about a person. A racial stereotype can insist on lies about a race because what a person sees a group of that one particular race do.

    5) How do you personally feel women and girls are supposed to carry themselves? What about men and boys? I feel like women should hold up to their standards and have control over themselves and always have respect for themselves. I feel like young man should take responsibility and ownership and do what it is best in to becoming a menReference

  4. What it means to you to be male?
Be responsible enough to handle your business to provide for you or your family.

What it means to you to be female?
Being independent and smarter enough to know how to take care and handle herself. And to have enough self esteem to be herself and know her worth.

What personal stereotypes have you faced?
People always assume I’m in a gang because of what I where and my skin color or I’m watched when I walk in store’s

How does those stereotypes hold up to what men and women should be? How does race play a factor? If you don’t dress or look a certain way people see different and race plays a factor because everyone looks at us the same way because of our color.

How do you personally feel women and girls are supposed to carry themselves? What about men and boys?
Women and girls should have respect for themselves and they should look clean and put together. Men and boys should be responsible, able to take care of themselves, and carry themselves with confidence.
